As an exchange program within Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto, Kyoto Experiment will organize 「Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM]: RAM Camp in Kyoto 2017」 a five-day dance-technology crossover workshop with dancers, choreographers and programmers from Japan, China and South Korea.

Reactor for Awareness in Motion (RAM) is a dance and technology research and development project, directed by YCAM since 2010. It creates virtual environments for dancers to perform in and develops new choreography tools.

The RAM process starts by using motion capture technology to capture the movements of a dancer’s body, which are then shown as an avatar on a screen or monitor. A virtual environment is designed with programming to change according to the movements of the dancer. For example, a dancer may be inspired to create new kinds of movement as they view the animation of a virtual world where their appearance is flipped upside down or they are chased by their past self. At the same time, programmers participate in choreography by coding the environments that stimulates the imagination of the dancers in this way.

During the five-day workshop, teams are formed with the dancers, choreographers, directors and programmers from the three countries. The participants then work together to create new forms of dance. They first attend study sessions (programming for dancers, dance for programmers) in order to understand how each other thinks and works, before using the toolkit developed by YCAM to create dance in novel way. On the final day, the results of the workshop are presented.

The workshop is a unique opportunity for technology and dance creators from three countries to collaborate via the RAM platform, learning about each other’s differences and building a creative dialogue.
