Kyoto based video & performance group Kyupi Kyupi consists of 3 members: director and video artist; Yoshimasa Ishibashi, sculptural artist; Mazuka Kimura, and graphic designer; Koichi Emura, and has introduced their video and installation work in Japan and overseas at places such as Center Pompidou (Paris), The Museum of Modern Art (New York), and Tate Modern (London). Their live performance Cabarotica, in which extremely manipulated video images and lighting accompanies dance and music, has succeeded in a long-run at ART COMPLEX 1928 and was well received internationally. This time, Kyupi Kyupi was commissioned to create a new piece for female artists in Japanese traditional performing arts. It is a part of “Kyoto Soseiza” program exploring the new appeal of Kyoto’s traditional arts. It is exciting to see how such a unique talent, known for creating highly technological, erotic and kitsch work, interact with traditional performing female artists and vice-versa.
