Chronicle of Argentina inspired by the artist’s mother.
Playwright, actor and musician – a brilliant mind makes her Japan debut.
Argentinian artist Lola Arias works in different disciplines such as theatre, literature, music and art projects. Her theater work has been performed at major European festivals and theaters including In Transit Festival (Berlin), Theater Spektakel (Zurich), Festival d’Avignon and more. Los que no duermen, the album she produced last year with renowned composer Ulises Conti, runs from acoustic to post-rock to poetry reading. “Melancolia y Manifestaciones (Melancholy and Demonstrations)” (premiered in Vienna) is inspired by the diary of her own mother.
In 1976, the year Lola was born, a coup d’état brought about a military dictatorship beginning Argentina’s dark days. It was also the beginning of melancholic days for Lola’s mother who was a progressive university professor. Where the tumultuous state of society and her personal life overlap, Lola finds more and more questions: Why did my mother get sick in 1976? Was it my birth? Was it the military coup? Mother and daughter, nation and individual, history and fiction, melancholy and demonstration intertwine. A tragic political reality is poetically and sometimes humorously, transformed into heart-rending drama.
