Talk: What Does the Director of a Performing Arts Festival Do?

What kind of person should the director of a performing arts festival be? How relevant are know-how, experience, ability, responsibility, personality, and drive? And does this change depending on the region or era? Looking back over the past ten years of Kyoto Experiment, this talk considers the future of the festival director.
 
Symposium: The Relationship Between Design and Festival Identity
Date and Time: October 12th 16:00-18:00
Venue: Lobby, 3F Park Plaza, ROHM Theatre Kyoto
Establishing the identity of a festival not only helps to publicize events but also builds trust in the new artists and work that the festival introduces. What is the potential for design in achieving good communication with audiences?
 
The Liaison Council of Theaters and Halls in Japan Symposium: Regional Cultural Creation and Theaters and Concert Halls
Time and Date: October 14th 11:00-13:00
Venue: Foyer, 1F South Hall, ROHM Theatre Kyoto
The Liaison Council of Theaters and Halls in Japan, which brings together around 50 theaters and concert halls all over Japan, promotes partnerships and information- sharing about in-house projects, training, co-productions, and subsidy systems in accordance with the Theater Law. Following the establishment of the Agency for Cultural A airs’ Headquarters for Vitalizing Regional Cultures in Kyoto in autumn 2016, this symposium serves as an opportunity for participants to exchange opinions on the role of theaters and concert halls in relation to regional promotion and vitalization.
 
Symposium: The Future Relationship Between Corporations and the Arts
Time and Date: October 16th 18:00-20:00
Venue: CEOmake KYOTO
In order to develop arts festivals more sustainably, what kind of relationship should the art world build with corporations? Drawing on various approaches by experienced practitioners, this symposium considers ways for assessing and evaluating art projects that are valid also for corporations, which operate according to logic and criteria very different from those in art.
