A torrent of sound and light fills a theater space:
Narratives of memory woven by a sequence of images

Tsuyoshi Hisakado’s installations intricately construct lyrical scenes through sound, sculpture, light, and shadow, directly intervening into the physical sensations of the viewer. The spaces he makes have received acclaim for their highly theatrical nature, while his interest in the performing arts has gradually grown, resulting not least in his stage and sound design for chelfitsch’s Time’s Journey Through a Room, which premiered at Kyoto Experiment in 2016.

Now Hisakado creates his first theater work in the South Hall of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, a space on a scale unprecedented for the artist. Hisakado’s field recordings collected arbitrarily on visits to Iceland, Indonesia, and Thailand, or during his everyday life in Kyoto, layer up in the space like sculptures with symbolic fragments of objects, producing a metaphorical oscillation between opposing concepts of strong and weak, front and back, truth and falsity. It reveals the power structures and norms in society, the balance of nature and artifice, the maternal and paternal, and the mindset that attempts to preserve a state of equilibrium between all of these. When the subtle and refined soundscape transforms the space, or when the rushing, violent flashes of light and roars of sound envelop the entire body, the critical explorations of the artist and personal memories of the audience intersect.
