Ioannis Mandafounis / Fabrice Mazliah

Question of “intimacy” and how we perceive “others” play out on the stage surrounded on all four sides by walls.

This work by a bright new light of European dance is challenging and thrilling. The uneasy intimacy of the performers shakes and distorts our perception of the body. It is a grand experiment in a tightly-packed space. The complicity of Ioannis Mandafounis and Fabrice Mazliah, who have known each other since childhood and have participated in works of “The Forsythe Company”, gives birth to such an intricately choreographed work questioning “intimacy” and how we perceive “others”. Seated behind a railing on the four sides of the stage, the spectators look down on the performers, in an experiment on closeness that destabilises, unsettles and distorts the perception of bodies caught in an ambiguous relationship. Attraction and repulsion. The controller and the controlled. By constantly switching performer’s role, the work asks a question of boundaries. Such an uneasy separation, near but far, applies not only between the two dancers but also between them and the audience. P. A.D. shows us the hole in the middle of these notions of perception”, “intention” and “interpretation”, that it is impossible to fill.
