She She Pop

THE RITE OF SPRING as performed by She She Popand their mothers

The Rite of Spring as you’ve never seen it in this portrayal of female sacrifice today

She She Pop is a female performance collective. They have a specific aesthetic and ideological profile. There is no director, and also no author or actors. Texts and concepts are developed collectively. Last year, they introduced Drawers (Schubladen) at Kyoto Experiment 2013, in which performers search their memories from letters, journals and photographs in drawers. They gradually reveal their vulnerable relationships and emotions, which are overlapped with by the turbulent political history of late 20th-century Berlin. The work tactfully looks at European history through the lives of women on both sides of the Berlin Wall. This time they are staging their version of The Rite of Spring (La Sacre du Printemps), Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Against the wild and intense rhythm of a basso continuo, She She Pop and their own mothers focus on the subject of female sacrifice in the family and in society. The company stayed in Kyoto for an artist’s residency to research and create this work last year. They looked into Japanese myths about the notion of self-sacrifice in family sociology as well as interviewing Japanese women. She She Pop consciously superimpose the religious sphere of ritual human sacrifice from The Rite of Spring with the ethical question of personal self-denial between women and men, as well as between mothers and daughters.
