Anomalous Fantasy_Korea Version
An encounter between a woman aspiring to perform the role of a man and the voices of a gay choir.
Yeoseong Gukgeuk is a type of all-female musical theater that emerged in Korea in the late 1940s and peaked in the 1950s, before going into rapid decline during the following decade. Fresh from representing South Korea at the Venice Biennale, siren eun young jung has spent more than ten years researching and working on a project involving a community of audiences and performers who lived through the golden age of Yeoseong Gukgeuk, and exploring how this act of women portraying men onstage is interrelated with politics and history. Her research has also expanded to encompass Japan’s Takarazuka Revue and other forms of all-female theater in Asia.
Anomalous Fantasy was first staged in South Korea in 2016, since then it has been presented with local gay choruses in Taiwan, Japan, and India. It deals with a woman in her thirties who suddenly renounces her entire life until now and gives everything she has to become a performer of male roles in the disappearing art of Yeoseong Gukgeuk. Alongside the actor playing the central woman, the Korean version also featured G-Voice, the Seoul-based gay chorus showcased in Lee Dong-ha’s documentary Weekends, which won the Panorama Audience Award in the Panorama Dokumente section at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival
Inaudible mutterings become proclamations. Invisible experiences become history. And when these are revealed onstage, there is song.

siren Eun Young Jung (b. 1974) is a Korean artist working across different disciplines including performance, exhibition, video, research and writing. Through her work she attempts to expand the language of feminist art and is interested in political and historical moments when the personal interferes. Her ongoing “Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project” she began in 2008 explores the history and community of Yeoseong Gukgeuk, a type of Korean all-female musical theatre popular in the 1950s. In 2016 she published “Trans-Theatre”, a book compiled of all her different activities. Her performance works include (Off)Stage/Masterclass, I am not going to sing and Anomalous Fantasy. She was awarded the Hermes award in 2013 and the Korea artist prize in 2018. She is exhibiting her new work at the Korea Pavilion of the Venice Biennale this year.
