A premiere performance of contemporary circus with beautiful scenography created by a combination of delicate bamboo craft and silk kumihimo (braid cords).
The title “KUMU” not only refers to the building (kumu) of bamboo craft, but also to traditional kumihimo (braid cords) used to assemble (kumu) bamboo sticks, as well as to dealing (tori-kumu) with the recent issues of abandoned bamboo forest. This way, the work also focuses on the issues local communities face and histories.
For the creation of this piece, Co.SCOoPP work jointly with Mish Weaver who creates works using bamboo for a British circus company No Fit State, Ryosuke Hara working on theatre scenography with abandoned bamboo, and the fabric maker Ma Maria.
