Cafe the Lake to Eat Words is a cafe and experiential artwork that serves “word-eating kanji cookies”: sweet treats shaped like various kanji characters, which provide a way to savor words one by one. We are also a book, and as we speak with visitors, we add pages day by day. In a world where words flow in and out, we recall our own time, our five senses, our words, which we had forgotten… Beneath Kyoto’s hallowed Gion tourism district, you can enjoy a kind of tourism centered on you. A café where you eat words inside a book. A lake, a natural medium, which reflects you. This underground theater performs for each and every one of you.
