Reading a certain Taste
From October last year to June this year in Tokyo, AAPA organized Opening a Space for Dialogue between Bodies, a series of programs around the theme “touching/being touched.” Following on from those programs, this exhibition and performance open a space to read the tokaki, or taste, of written words.* They stem from a dance (contact improvisation) workshop I held in Shizuoka, during which participants spoke while touching one another’s bodies; as a result of a conversation with a participant during a break, I was handed something with words written on it, and this forms the starting point for these works.
* A tokaki is a short stick used to level off a heap of rice in a measuring box. It can also mean “general idea,” “taste.”
