Music, Reading
Yuko Minami / Kaori Okubo
po Pe po Story with recitation and bandoneon
A play without actors… A performance without a stage setting… Listening to words… Feeling music… The story’s world is built up by each and every audience member who is there, listening. Little by little, the story starts to follow a different course and light up, guided by everyone in the venue. The story is constructed by three parties: one who reads aloud, one who plays the bandoneon, and the listener. Yuko Minami (who reads) and Kaori Okubo (who plays the bandoneon) first performed this work in May 2024 at Kyoto’s Social Kitchen. Deciding they would meet and rehearse it at least once, they told their story under the influence of the venue’s space, light, and acoustics, and the audience’s presence. This performance will also be held in Social Kitchen and will feature readings of works such as Kenji Miyazawa’s debut story The Spider, the Slug, and the Raccoon alongside live bandoneon playing. When there’s nothing to elucidate the story visually, what do we feel and see through the words and sounds? Light? Smell? Touch? Taste?? What will the story you see look like?
