Yu Kuwabara Exhibition – Sounded Voice, Voiced Sound
Yu Kuwabara approaches her unique musical notation and ways of imagining music-writing from the perspective of the visual arts, presenting the link between sound and voice as illustrations or drawings of invisible things. Her scores and related drawings (in various sizes and media) are exhibited here, particularly for works she composed for shōmyō, a type of Buddhist chant. There will also be a live performance by members of the Awai-Za collective and a talk by Kuwabara herself, in which she will share the process whereby sound and music take shape through the acts of music-writing and performance. To mark the release by Kairos (Vienna) of her first CD of collected works in June 2024, we will take a many-sided and comprehensive look back at its creation. These events are held in conjunction with the Yu Kuwabara Celebration, which will take place in Tokyo on December 1.
