Imagining a body liberated
from the preconceptions of food
In our current times, where information on food and health overflows, the standard for what we “should” eat remains elusive, shaped by shifting trends, the media, the times, and the environment. Although there is no single answer, we continue to be influenced by what society deems “correct,” and often feel our bodies to be under its control. Still, even when we have vastly different preferences, we hold on to the desire to share a meal at the same table. In her latest work, Midori Kurata—known for linking social issues with the self through dance—offers a fictional and experimental exploration of today’s scattered and often strange philosophy of food and self.
Joining Kurata on stage are an actor, a sculptor, and a café owner. In the two months leading up to the performance, they each altered their everyday eating habits in specific ways. They step onto the stage with their bodies subtly shifted by these alterations. What might these bodies, detached from the notion of “correct eating” and shaped by arbitrary routines, express through this chaotic quartet?
Please note that sawdust of camphor tree and other kinds of tree may float in the room during the performance.

Midori Kurata / akakilike
Kyoto, Japan
Born in 1987 in Mie, Midori Kurata graduated with a degree in moving image and performing arts from Kyoto University of Art and Design (now, Kyoto University of the Arts). She trained in classical and modern ballet from the age of three. Based in Kyoto, she works as a director, choreographer, and dancer. In each work she creates, she engages with herself and others, using the performance structures to bring out the phenomena in the form of fiction, and explore the possibilities of dance. Since 2016, Kurata has served as the head of akakilike, a performance group comprising only herself and a team of technical crew, and aspiring to create an environment in which performers and crew members can engage in the company’s works on an equal footing. In 2023, Family Portrait, the best-known work of early akakilike, was invited to Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels and Le Festival d’Automne à Paris, touring abroad for the first time. Kurata received the Kyoto City Artistic New Comer Award 2023 and the 18th Japan Dance Forum Award. From April 2024, she serves as the Artistic Director for dance at Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre.
