Haribo Kimchi
Aromas wafting through the air. The sound of knives. The hiss of the flames.
And the chatter of spirits taking a break at a food stall.
Jaha Koo has received international acclaim for his trilogy exploring imperialism in East Asia. Constructing works at the intersection of politics, history, and personal history, Koo performs alongside his own music and videography. His new work, Haribo Kimchi, centers on Korean food, which has become increasingly popular in the West in recent years. As something rooted in people’s daily lives, food culture can build the identity of a region as well as form a mirror that reflects the structure of a society.
Koo invites us on a culinary journey. The setting is a pojangmacha food stall like the ones that dot the alleys of South Korea at night. In a series of poignant and absurdist anecdotes, he recounts the story of his own migration to Europe, gives us insights into the evolution of kimchi culture and the significance of seaweed soup, and also shares the bitter taste
of forever being a foreigner and the deep savory flavors of home.
