Dyeing and Weaving as Media: History, Technology, and Art
Founded in 1688 in the Nishijin district of Kyoto, HOSOO continues the legacy of Nishijin textiles and preserves the tradition of kimono culture while also creating their own unique techniques which incorporate Nishijin weaving. The development of dyeing and weaving has evolved in a deep connection with the local environment and its history, alongside societal structures and power dynamics. In this conversation with Masataka Hosoo and curator Kumiko Idaka, we reflect on this rich history while we discuss HOSOO and its collaborations with contemporary art and technology, as well as the activities of HOSOO GALLERY, which opened in 2019.
