“The Children’s Choice Awards” Awards Ceremony Photo by Yoshikazu Inoue
With the final ceremony for the Children’s Choice Awards on November 5th, Kyoto Experiment 2017 came to a close.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to the members of the Executive Committee, the organizers of Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto, our sponsors and supporters, and the dedicated production and administration team for their tireless efforts. Alongside the artists who participated as well as our audiences, Kyoto Experiment could not have taken place without you all.
Having reached the milestone of the eighth festival, we can now identity certain artists as festival “regulars.” Though there may naturally be some who say the festival should strive to stay fresh, I personally could sense a strong atmosphere of growing anticipation for what the artists will create next. While not based in Kyoto, these artists have become familiar presences in the city by appearing regularly in Kyoto Experiment, and I am delighted to see the affinity that builds between them and local audiences.
These past years, as we have organized various programs aimed at discovering new kinds of experiments, based on a firm understanding of art history, as well as reforming the management of the festival, I have been conscious of how Kyoto Experiment will continue to develop further. The future does indeed look bright. Interacting this year with the elementary school students who served as judges for the awards and observing their insight and ability to engage in dialogue, I can’t help but feel excited about the day coming soon when they will walk out onto the “stage” of society.
I look forward to seeing everyone again at the festival next autumn.
