The Cycling Sound Theater begins!
Experience the sounds of bike-friendly Kyoto

Kansai Studies is a regional research program that forms one of the festival’s pillars. Inspired by the project’s archive and the underground music movement of New York in the late 1970s, Masamitsu Araki presents a new piece based on his own fieldwork. For this series, he focuses on bicycles—an essential part of everyday life in Kyoto—to create a singular “cycling sound theater.”

Drawing on a brief research period, which he coined as “fast research,” he draws out the bicycle’s functionality, mechanism, mobility, and potential within the city, and creates music that collages these elements through an improvisational and physical approach. He also developed a new sound device utilizing this vehicle. These processes are integrated on stage, where the device’s performance, powered by cyclists, chaotically resonates with environmental sounds, people’s voices, and live streams from the street. Come immerse yourself in the vibrant and experimental soundscapes of the contemporary city of Kyoto.

Masamitsu Araki

Kyoto, Japan

Araki is an artist, composer, and sound designer. Born in 1981 in Yamagata and now based in Kyoto. His practice is both music-centered and located on the fringes of music, pursuing the creativity of listening through humorous approaches and prompting us to rethink contexts and effects. He constructs sound fields via unique interpretations and processes, which he presents in a wide range of formats, including theater pieces, installations, performances, tours, and recordings. His recent performance works include Vacant TT (Sound Around 004 Genshi, ROHM Theatre Kyoto, 2024), Soundtrack for Midnight TAMURO (Kyoto Experiment 2021 Autumn, Mountaintop Parking Lot, Hieizan Driveway, 2021), Public Address-Sound of Place (Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels, 2021) and Zombies and Soundtracks (Lecture Room, Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, 2021). Solo exhibitions include “Why don’t you dance?” (Nagano Prefectural Art Museum Art Lab Ⅲ, 2022), “The Breeze and You” (gallery αM, Tokyo, 2022) and “Zombies and Me” (The Triangle, Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, 2020).
