Akibako Shuppan is an artist collective, making works in various forms, with “neatly containing having-nothing” as the axis of its activity. There are three members in the collective, led by Yuki Sohtome, a Butoh dancer who writes and directs the works, and an actor and a printmaker. We will be presenting a new piece FLOAT, co-created with guest artists, a choreographer and a visual artist. Running time of the performance is expected to be two hours. The theme of this piece is “individual” and it explores various ways of “resistance” that humans show, while making references to Kamo no Chomei’s Hojoki, Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams and The Rebel by Albert Camus. Resistance that is referred to here is not the denial of death or impermanence, but it is an attitude to confront them and still to maintain one’s thinking.
