As well as producing installations that utilize objects found in the place of exhibition, everyday materials, and power as physical phenomena, UMEDA presents performance works such as tours inviting the audience to unfamiliar places, stage works focusing on functions found in theaters, and chorus projects without a center point. He is also internationally renowned as a leading artist in the field of sound art.
Recent exhibitions include “Wetland” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 2025-2026), “wait this is my favorite part” (The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2023-2024), “UMEDA Tetsuya in Beppu ‘0 Tai’” (Various locations in Beppu, 2020-2021), “On the origin of voices” (Fukuoka Art Museum, 2019-2020), and “See, Look at Observed what Watching is” (PICA/ Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, US, 2016). Selected performance works include ku-do- (ZA-KOENJI PUBLIC THEATRE, Tokyo, 2026), Walk about Water (Nam June Paik Art Center, Yongin, South Korea, 2024), Riverwalk (Kyoto Experiment 2022, 2022), Age 0, September (Takatsuki Contemporary Theater, Osaka, 2022), Composite: Variations / Circle (Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels, Belgium, 2017), and INTERNSHIP (Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea, 2016; TPAM 2018, KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theatre, Yokohama, 2018).

In the city of Ibaraki, Osaka, 23 Senior High School students and two Junior High School students are taking part in the club’s activity. When they start, most of the students have no previous experience of theatre, but all of them are involved in all of the performances as actors. It is the characteristic feature that they all listen to each other and make a performance based on multiple stories of the students themselves. The importance is placed on the club as the place to learn the ways to engage with others using the body and the language, which is closely connected to theatre, and it is a larger task for the students to build a community in which they can all be distinctive yet be together at the same time, than merely acquiring the skills of theatre.
In 2025, the club won the Excellence Award, Acting Award and Script Award in Osaka Senior High School Drama Competition, and Excellent Script Award in Script Selection of Kinki Senior High School Drama Council.
