Naoki Morita is an artist who makes works by attaching everyday questions and insights to existing products. Microwave Theater, one of his signature works, came about when he realized that the mesh on the microwave door resembled the frames of animation works. He then likened the microwave’s principle of “heating through vibration” to “stirring life into action”, the original meaning of animation.
Other works like A Device That Captures the Feeling of Picking Up a Cotton Swab and The Moment in Daily Life When I Feel My Center of Gravity Most Clearly, have also been made with having his insights, recognition and the body senses, the insights into the experience of picking up cotton swabs and the experience of carrying heavy shopping bags, as filters.
Although his works are not expressed through the forms of performance, dance or theatre programmed in Kyoto Experiment, he is trying to refer to the recognition, the body and the movement via products, which those physical art forms deal with. This exhibition aims to extend the sphere of physical expression through Morita’s works, which are not performance, dance or theatre.
