Is an unconnected pretzel not a pretzel anymore?

The unique knot-shape of pretzel, with its name said to have originated from the Latin word for “arm”, is considered to come from “folded arms” or the figure of praying monk.

We share the same recipe and, in each area where we live, we broke a pretzel into three parts and baked them with a “prayer”.

Fragments borne in different regions eventually are gathered at Social Kitchen. Then, can they be tied to each other again?

Even though the same recipe is shared, the dough that has gone through different time, different places and different bodies is not the same anymore. Still, believing in the shape of praying, we try to re-compose the unseen connection.

This work is not about baking one piece of bread, but an attempt to re-consider the act of “making together”.
