Performance
Weight is Pain is a physical practice dealing with the pain and joy of mutually undertaking the weight that the body of the other possesses. Participants lie down in a line, hold each other and breathe together under the white cloth. The last person of the line slips out of the cloth and walks on other participants’ bodies to go to the front of the line. This process will be repeated while anyone can stop it. All the participants have the rights to participate, withdraw and to restart.
By taking responsibility of the strangers’ weights and entrusting one’s own to the others, the participants resist the cowardice of modern world where people are too afraid to relate to others, and physically re-examine the conditions of co-existence. In sensing what it is to stamp on others and being stamped, they will make it visible the fine line between intimacy and violence.
In this project, we will look for a place in Kyoto where we can perform Weight is Pain and will do it. The place of performance will be always shared via a location sharing app, so that the audience will be able to find out.
We hope to uncover the conflicting line between intimacy and violence as we cross the border of the audience and participants, and to open a new dialogue with society through our bodies.

Artist Profile
Imashuku Mew
Tokyo
Born in 2000, based in Tokyo. Works across poetry and contemporary art to redefine intimacy and violence. Using media that engage the sense of touch in a broad sense (heat, pressure, vibration, staggering), the artist constructs devices and situations that shake the boundaries between self and other. Through practices involving self and others within these setups, the artist presents new modes of coexistence in intimate two-person relationships and public spaces.
